Twickenham Treasure - Milestone Residential

Miranda Jessop talks to John Walton and discovers why he is Twickenham’s most experienced property advisor.

Milestone Residential is the most longstanding estate agent in Twickenham with its origins actually dating back to 1890.  Over the last 128 years, the Milestone brand has helped many thousands of people in the area to buy, sell and let their properties.  When I myself purchased my own house through Milestone Residential back in 2005, the agent told me I had made a good choice.  And he was right;  in thirteen years not only has my house potentially more than doubled in value, it makes a very happy home for a family of five and a cat.

Parent company, Milestone & Collis was first founded in 1890 to meet the increasing demand for housing in the area.  The Enclosure Award in 1818 had left over 182 acres of land between the boundaries of Staines Road and Hampton Road to be developed into housing.  Further growth in the area came about after the opening of Twickenham station in 1848 and the introduction of the tram system in 1903 further enhanced Twickenham as a popular area for Londoners to move.  In 1907 the rugby stadium was built, putting the town well and truly on the map.

Today, with offices in Twickenham, Teddington and Whitton, Milestone Residential is very proud of the service they have provided to generations of local families within Twickenham and the surrounding areas.  And who better to tell me about the ethos of the company than John Walton, an estate agent with fifty years experience under his belt,  who has been working for Milestone for the last thirty-five years.  Having successfully managed the Teddington branch for fifteen years, John was appointed partner of the Twickenham office when it first opened its doors on Heath Road twenty years ago.  “Our mission has always been to offer a very hands-on and caring service.”  John has seen so many changes in the property market over the years and he tells me just how different the role of an estate agent is nowadays.  “It is far more pressurised; in the old days you would agree a price with a handshake and it would be up to the agent to see the sale through as and when.  Now everyone wants everything done immediately; people want to move very quickly and there is much more involvement with solicitors.”

Twenty years since it first opened, Milestone Residential in Twickenham is now on the edge of a new era as it was recently bought back by its original owner, management and lettings agent Milestone & Collis in Church Street.    John has taken on the role of ‘consultant’ at Milestone Residential while Stuart Rowe is the manager who will be taking the Heath Road office into its next exciting phase.  While the Teddington and Whitton offices remain under different partners and ownership, all three sales offices will continue to work closely together.  So, when the time does come to sell, I know who to contact, but don’t hold your breath, I am quite content living in Twickenham and have no intention of going anywhere anytime soon.
